Development of various national & regional identities in Spain has been a long paradoxical process spanning at least the 19th & 20th centuries; while the Spanish state is one of a few European states that has remained territorially intact throughout this period, it has undergone an acute national & identity conflict. This case can be explained by a specific combination of factors: the prior existence of a highly consolidated state & prenational Spanish identity, relative weakness of political & socioeconomic developments, consequent strength & capacity for reaction of antimodern social groups, survival of ethnic identities susceptible to political action, lack of correspondence between the centers of political & emerging economic power, & loss of the old empire along with an inability to construct a new one. The Galician national movement in Spain had experienced an evolution starting from a provincialist forerunner (1840-1868), which was followed by a regionalist phase (1874-1916), & which has culminated in a fully nationalist stage (from 1916 onwards). The increase in social support & political influence was very limited until 1931, but during the Second Spanish Republic (1931-1936), the Galician national movement underwent a period of fast social expansion, both in electoral results & in membership, which was interrupted by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936). During the First Francoist phase, Galician activists kept the historical memory of the national movement alive; & devoted themselves to the task of literary activities & cultural recovery. 4 Tables.
